Gerry: The EXIF on the those pics say they were taken about 4:30 in
the afternoon. But the shadows are pretty pronounced - I would have
guessed it was more like 6:30 in the evening. But I know location
has a lot to do with that.

4.30 to 5.15 roughly, winter here in Australia, sun sets about 5.30.

I guess what I want to know is: Can you get these kinds of shots 45
minutes before sundown? I like to take pics of the kids at the park
or at baseball games, but many are in near the evening, because
it's so HOT in cetral Texas! Thanks, --Greg

These were iso200, so kids playing no problems, baseball a bit more of a challenge, may have to bump iso up to 800 or 1600 and depends on how steady your hand is (monopod?), glass, focus speed, etc. You will get usable pics and more keepers with practice, no substitute for faster glass.

The other link to the football pics (last 15 or so in the gallery) was stadium lights and I was at iso1600 1/200 to 1/250 so many had some blur from camera/subject movement, another stop or two and I'd have got many more keepers.
