People lens

I am trying to decide between the Nikon 28-70 f/2.8 and the 17-55 f/2.8 DX lenses for people shots and portraits. My camera is the D200, and the other lenses I have are the 70-200 VR and the 17-35 f/2.8. Any thoughts?
The 17-55 is a bit cheaper, but the 28-70 fills a nice gap in my current lineup. I was thinking I could sell my 17-35 and replace it with the 17-55 to reduce the number of lenses I have to carry. However, I am worried that I need the little bit of extra "reach" that the 28-70 provides.
