FF vs 1.6x Question (PhotoZone tests)
May 23, 2006

Consider the following lens tests at PhotoZone:

Canon 17-55 / 2.8 IS:

http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_1755_28/index.htm

Canon 24-105 / 4L IS:

http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_24105_4_is/index.htm

First of all, please note that the 24-105 / 4L IS is equivalent, in terms of FOV and DOF, to a 15-65 / 2.5L IS on a 1.6x camera.

That said, you will note that the 17-55 / 2.8 IS has a higher resolution than the 24-105 / 4L IS. My question is does a 12.8 MP FF sensor give more detail with the 24-105 / 4L IS, or does an 8.2 MP 1.6x sensor give more detail with a 17-55 / 2.8 IS?

If the advantage is in favor of the FF, how does that work? Sure FF has more pixels, but if the resolution of the lens does not exceed that of the sensor, then those extra pixels do not add additional information, do they? If so, how so?

Thanks, and please be patient with your explanation -- I'm not the brightest candle in the church, you know. : )
