4:3 Easier to Work With?
May 21, 2006

Compared to the 4:3 aspect ratio of a digicam or an Oly DSLR, I find the vertically 'narrower' 3:2 ratio of my D50 a little restrictive: for example, a particular scene taken with a 28mm equiv lens on the D50 'cuts' portions of the frame at the top and bottom when compared to a 4:3 ratio. This is easily seen on a non-widescreen PC monitor, with large black bands at the top and bottom of the image which would (if I understand correctly...) be filled had the shot been taken with a 4:3 ratio camera.

I feel 'robbed' of headroom and constantly find myself having to rotate my D50 to the vertical orientation to compensate.

I am looking at this correctly? Am I being 'robbed'?! Forget about the advantages or otherwise of the four-thirds system, I am simply interested in the framing question.

Thanks.
