Any particular reason for using different apertures and focal lengths for these "comparsion" shots?

Personally I think it would be slightly more useful if you used similar settings for both lenses as the 17-55 can vary considerable depending on focal length and aperture.

But even so, the two lenses are VERY different creatures for quite different uses. You're wise to own both of them The fact that they overlap at 50mm is only a tiny point of similarity in relation to a wide range of differences which don't make these two comparable, IMHO.

Of course, you can either of them to take pictures of Aunty Fran.
