24-70/2.8 Canon vs Sigma, Buying this week... help!
May 7, 2006

Had rented a Canon 24-70/2.8L a few weeks ago for a low-lit indoor sports event and loved it. But at $1K+ it was above my budget. Did some research and ordered a $370 Sigma 24-70/2.8 DG DF Macro from Dell.

Well, it's backordered 6 weeks and am picking it up locally to use for next week. Lens have to be able to perform the following duties next week:

Low lit sports event

Pre-wedding photos (fittings, etc) and wedding shots if the pro-photog doesn't mind.
Communion (not religious, so I think it's either a communion or a baptism)

So, second thoughts come in...

For those with experience, is the Canon siginificantly better than the Sigma for these shot situations? I've heard that the Canon has better IQ/Autofocus than the Sigma... but how much better? Will the Sigma keep tracking in the low-lit sports event? As for lens quality/sharpness I heard they were fairly similar.

Something tells me I should be happy with either lens, but after renting the L I'm torn. Still, hard to overcome the $700 extra for the L.
