H1 and Wide Angle Converter VCL-DH0758

Does the Sony VCL-DH0758 require use of the original filter adapter that is supplied with the H1? I bought an "open box" camera at Best Buy and the adapter was missing. I am hoping I can use the converter mounted directly on the camera instead of having to have the adapter.

Also, anybody using this combination and are the images degrade significantly with the converter?
