What exactly is so great about the R1 lens?

Question about the R1 lens -

I keep reading about how great the R1 lens is, and the pictures posted do look amazing. Since the R1 lens is widely touted as the key factor in buying the camera, I would like to understand what exactly a lens brings to an image? In other words, if the R1 lens is removable and I mounted it on a D50, would I get the same image quality?

1. Great looking colors - is this more a function of the CMOS sensor, jpg engine, or the lens? Does the quality of a lens make any difference at all to the color reproduction of an image?

2. Resolution - again, is this purely a function of the sensor size and type, or does the lens have an impact on the crispness of the image?
