Just got a 24-105 lens. Questions.

Im not camera expert but I did just get a 24-105 lens for my 20D. I take all my photos from a boat. A fishing charterboat. I have a couple questions. 1. I have a heck of a time keeping my lenses clean. Whats the best material, cloth, accessory, to touch them up or clean them. Ive been know to use my shirt in a pinch but not on this lens.
2. The lens came with the hood. What purpose does the hood serve? Should I even use it for my style of photography?
