Wide Angle Lenses, e.g. Canon EF 24mm f/2.8

I am thinking of getting a Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 wide angle lens for my newly purchased 350D. Does anybody have any experiences using a lens like this with their EOS? What advantages will I have with landscapes and portraits over the 18-55mm factory lens?
