The real problem is in the wide angles. I bought a 35mm F/2 as a "normal" lens, but settled on a zoom (12-24 F/4 Tokina) for the wide end. The primes certainly are better, but the quality of zoom lenses has improved markedly over the years. When I started (60's and 70's) the zoom lenses were basically all junk. My wife and I share 3 primes and 4 zooms between our 2 D70's.
