24-70 L zoom ring resistance

Got a Canon 24-70 L recently. Fantastic pics--makes the previous 9,774 pics look fuzzy. However, the zoom ring is noticeably stiffer (i.e., has more resistance) when turning from 24 to 28 than when turning from 50 to 70. Is this normal? Should I send it back to swap?

Neither B&H nor Canon have managed to answer this question.
