200 f/2.8 L prime vs. 70-200 f/4 L
Dec 28, 2005

I’m close to buying a lens, in the last days of the rebates. I was going to get the 70-200 f/4 L, but then I got to thinking about the 200/2.8L, which isn’t that much more expensive. I haven’t seen a direct comparison of this lens to the zoom. The-Digital-Picture’s review compares it to the 70-200 2.8, and says that the prime is slightly sharper at smaller apertures. How does it compare to the f/4 version of the zoom, in terms of image quality? Obviously, the other advantages of the prime are that it’s a full stop faster, and also, as a result, can autofocus on the 20D with the 2x teleconverter. The disadvantage of the prime is that it may not be flexible enough and may leave me wanting another lens in the 100-200mm range (possibly the 100/2). I like primes, but 200mm with the crop factor seems like it might be too long and leave too much of a gap...
