Are Generic Batteries Legit?

i need a new battery for my ailing G3. Obviously they no longer produce the bp511, so i need the bp-511a, but i'm seeing on ebay 1900mah generic replacements, instead of the retail canon bp-511a with only 1350mah or something like that. Are generic batteries legit, and if so, is there some place better to purchase a generic?
