Hue-Sat-Lightness workflow

At an exhibition quite recently I saw some of the most beautiful and vibrant photographs I have ever seen.
I managed to speak to the lady responsible, for just a few moments, she informed me she used a Canon 300 with photoshop 6. She told me that she use's levels, then colour adjustments were made with 'HSB and masks'
unfortunately she was called away before I had a chance to find out more!
I have a Canon 350D with Photoshop CS, (alas no Raw at the moment) but in no way can I match her expertise.
Can any one please advise on a HSL workflow?
