Nikon FF = Canon Nightmare?
Dec 9, 2005

I speculate that when Nikon ever comes out with a full-frame DSLR they will include a "high speed/DX-compatibility" crop mode comparable with the high-speed crop mode now available in the D2x but with 1x vs 1.5x factor instead of 1.5x vs 2x.
The advatage would then be 3 fold:

  • the DX lenses will still work perfectly on this camera

  • the smaller image in DX mode allows faster FPS (like on the D2x now)

  • the smaller image in DX mode gives an extra reach to tele lenses (like on the D2x now)

Canon however, who chose to design the EFS lens range to feed images to their cropped sensors do not have the possibility to do this: the EFS lenses pertrude deeper in the body, requiring a smaller mirror.

So it seems impossible for them to make a FF camera that can also use the EFS lens range.

In the beginning they claimed that the 18-55 would be the only lens of that type ever being made, specially concieved for the 300D but later on they expanded their range to multiple EFS lens models, some quite pricy and powerful.

Technically, canon could easily introduce a DX compatibility mode on their full-frame bodies but they would of course be completely stupid to do so, because that would encourage their customers to buy third party DX lenses instead of their own EFS lenses.
As long as competitors do not bring out FF there is no problem.

But once they do, and thereby offering a compatibility with existing lensens which cannon cannot, canon users will very likely feel left out in the cold.

History seems to repeat itself because the same thing happened almost 20 years ago, when they introduced the EOS system which was incompatible with their MF lenses, while other manufacturers chose to keep their lens bayonets compatible between AF and MF.

As a long time Canon adept (had 5 eos cameras and more than 10 lenses since my first 620) I am starting to have more and more doubts about their recent strategies.
