70-200mm vr + TC or 80-400mm

I am thinking about buying the 70-200 + TC, or 80-400mm nikon VR. I am trying to get the lens combination with the greatest flexibility and reasonable cost.

I like the range of the 80-400, but am concerned about the slow focus and slow speed. However, it is Much less expensive than the 70-200 and MUCH lighter and smaller, esp. when the TC is added.

The 70-200mm is a great lens. My only concerns are cost and weight.

I would be using the lens for my son's football games, wildlife and travel.

Your thoughts and opinions are welcome.
