Hi, I didn't see your exif info, but maybe your ISO was a little too high for the light exposure. Or try a slightly higher shutterspeed. A few look ok, like the red leaves. It looked kind of weird though with the road shot with all the grass. Not good contrast or clarity at all. Strange.

Keep at it. Sometimes the first day of shooting is a disappointment until you get used to the lens. I know that happened to me 3 times. But if its not performing easily and correctly for you in a few tries, I'd take it back. I did that with a Tokina, the guy said there was nothing wrong with the lens, and I knew better. Besides this hobby is expensive and lenses should not be complicated, but consistent.
