Moving to prime to improve my skill
Aug 27, 2005

Hi folks, first-time long-time...

I've been shooting for years (mostly auto racing), and I'm failrly decent when it comes to auto racing or snapshots. But I'm no good at "photography". I'd like to get better skills at general, everyday photography.

I've read a lot lately about how some people have found success with switching back to prime lenses to improve their skill, as it forces you to rely less on the equipment and more on composition, etc. I'm not expecting to become Adams from switching equipment, but I'm intrigued by the idea of forcing me to work better at the shots by limiting what my equipment can do.

The only prime lenses are the 50mm and the 10.5mm fisheye (which I don't think really counts for what I'm talking about).

I'm thinking of a 24mm (or 28mm), plus an 85mm (or 105mm) to go along with the 50mm.

Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
Greg
