On a point and shoot you just set the flash to "always on" setting, so that the camera uses flash whether its low light or not. When the flash goes off it overpowers the ambient background lighting, making the background black. It only works out to about four feet away.

D70 should have a similar setting. Mine gets here in a few days, can't wait.
