The SMC Pentax-FA 28-70mm f/4 AL was a great lens for its price. It consistantly gets high marks for sharpness and low flair. There have been reports of some of these lenses having problems with fused elements separating, giving a cloudy look. Check the one you're buying beforehand to make sure it doesn't have this problem. Personally, I suspect that a few bad apples got disproportionate attention. There are probably a vast majority of these lenses out there that haven't had any such problem.

I owned the 28-70 and really liked it, but eventually decided I needed (or at least wanted) a little more reach from my standard zoom. So I tried a few things and eventually set upon the SMC Pentax-FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5. It too has proven to be a super lens for the price. Very sharp, once again.

Either one is a good choice, as long as you verify that whichever one you get is in good shape.
