1Gb XD card and Card Readers?

Hi
Has anyone had a problem reading a 1Gb XD card with an external usb card reader.
Mine just moans about card not formated...
The card works fine and of course I can just connect the camera(c70) directly to the computer. but I do miss not being able to use my card reader
