Received the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 lens today.
Not too impressed with the auto focus, slightly out. At first I
thought it was me and camera shake. I thought I was quite steady
but tried in manual focus and 3 out 5 pictures were sharp.

All AF lenses have some tolerances in focusing. I don't find my 18-50 to be any worse than the Canon 50mm f1.8 or Canon 100mm f2 in AF accuracy. The Canon 18-55 kit lens is far worse in this respect.

Read somewhere about lens being prone to camera shake.
If anyone else has experienced this please let me know

I find this surprising. Other than IS lenses, I don't see how one lens can be "more prone to camera shake" than another lens of the same focal length. (The weight distribution may have an indirect effect, if the lens is very imbalanced. That should not be the case with the Sigm 18-50 though).
