E-TTL II has two settings: evaluative and averaging. Try which one
works best for you. For more control of flash behavior, you also
have FEL. Another good flash option is the Metz 54 MZ-4, which is
actually cheaper than the 580EX, and gives you autoflash. Some
prefer autoflash because it takes the camera's TTL system out of
the loop. So between E-TTL II evaluative, E-TTL II averaging, FEL,
and autoflash, you should find something that will work well for
you. E-TTL II works great for me, but about 75% of my flash
photography is bounced flash.

There's something I've been wondering about: isn't a 20d in average ETTL mode and a 580ex equivalent to an auto thyristor flash (but better since it's TTL)?
