Artist copyright is implied, actually. However, in order for it to be enforceable, you have to use the actual c in a circle copyright symbol (c in parenthesis doesn't count).

You can apply for a copyright for works if you need, but it's really no more enforceable than any other. It's sort of the digital equivalent of having something notarised, however, and lends credence to your claim of ownership, but it is not the only way to copyright a work.
