Calibrating your monitor/video card

Does anyone have any tips on how to calibrate your monitor and/or video card without buying any expensive tools/software? I would like to set up my monitor to display colors and brightness levels that will be close to most printing places. I am running an Hp pavilion mx 75 monitor with an NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 video card.
