Alternative opinion on the 50mm 1.8
Jan 20, 2005

Hi all.

I just keep readings various posts and there is no thread where you cant' read: "get the 50 f1.8, it is aweeesssoooommmmmeeee".

Well, I must say I bought it a few months ago (because of the great comments on the forum), and .... was so dissapointed that I sold it two months ago.
Why?

a) 50mm becomes 75 on my D70 so it is too long for street photog or landscape, and too short for portrait. (this is my point of view: I like focal lenghts like 90-135mm for portraiture)

b) f1.8 is impossible to focus in a reliable way. DoF is so small that you can't focus precisely enough in AF when shooting people, and in MF the viewfinder is too small.

So to me the 50mmf1,8 is a beautifull lens on paper but totally useless in my real world photography.

Just my two cents.

Cheers, Julien
