Here are some 80-400 OS examples:

I've had the Sigma 80-400mm f4.5-5.6 EX OS APO for a few weeks now.

I find that it is on the whole a good all rounder - I have found
though that it appears to be a little soft at 400mm. Being a new
user to OS there are two practical tips that I would want other
VR/OS newbies to be aware of:

1. The OS takes a second or so to settle down. Pressing the shutter
before the it has settled down can give very poor results.

2. There is a tendency to think that the OS can perform miracles. I
found that sometimes I would take obscenely long exposures handheld
at long focal lengths producing slightly blurred pictures without
realising it. I certainly never did this when I used my FM2! I
needed to constantly remind myself that I still need to keep an eye
on the shutter speed when using aperature priority!

I'm no professional and don't intend to spend mega bucks on more
new lenses - but when the time and money is right I would probably
opt to sell the Sigma 80-400 OS in favour of the Nikon 70-200 VR
and get TCs when I need to. I'll upload some examples from my
recent trip to Madikwe game reserve in South Africa shortly.

I'll give you an opinion when I've had a chance to use it in anger.

Initial impression is good. AF is not too slow (but is a little
screechy when compared with Sigma's HSM). The OS definitely works
and seems to be capable - doesn't perform miracles but neither does
VR ... but having said that, I've not used any of Nikon's VR
lenses(!)

I would be interested to know how it performs. I know that teh
Sigma 120-300/2.8 hsm lens gets some extremely good reviews even
with a 1.4 TC (420/f4) but that is a $2000 lens

Santa Claus is bringing me a D70 for christmas. I can't wait!

I am looking to get a lens to complete the kit lens for nature pics
and bird pics. I think the 70-300 (from Sigma or Nikon) will not be
long enough and the VR or OS seems to be a big advantage, so I have
narrowed my choices to the two 80-400 lenses.

Anybody care to comment on the quality of these two lenses.

Thanks!

Yves
