police lens

im new to slr's. ive used three point and shoots (personal cameras) over the last 4 years. i am putting a camera purchase order together for my unit, at my department. we will be attempting to purchase 2 20d's. my unit does traffic fatality reconstruction.

my question revolves around lens choice. the general consensus is we dont take telephoto pictures really in an effort to try and reproduce the scenes as the human eye was capable of seeing. we do take closeups though. at this time i dont take interior of buildings, although we do take vehicle interior photos. these photos are really for airbag deployment, seatbelt, blood etc. we arent looking for a vehicle interior panoramic shot.

i was considering the versatility of the 17-85 is, but now i am having my doubts.... im open to suggestions.

we do take overall shots of the roadway, vehicle positions... etc
