What Flash Do You Use?

I've been a lurker for quite some time. This forum has helped me immensely although I've never really posted.

I have come to the realization that I need a good flash for my Canon 300d. So what types do you use and would you recommend?

I'm trying to stay below $200 which immediately singles out the 580ex and 550ex. I have been seriously looking at the 420ex.

Once again, it's just for portraits and simple fills. Any recommendations or assistance is welcome.
