Lens(es) to START the DS journey
Dec 1, 2004

So I'm waiting on my DS to arrive (local Camera Store).

I still have not made a final decision on what lens(es) to get for it. I hope to grow with the camera and add more lenses down the road.

I guess many of the new (or potential new) DS owners are struggling with the same question. I'm sure many people have asked the question before, but I decided to add the $'s to the mix for the newbees like me

(Background: The main reason I'm getting the camera is to take better pictures of my quick moving kids (3 & 1 year old) indoor & out, as well as typical vacation shots, or maybe a few pictures of local surfers. I've had digital camera for the past 4 years, and owned a Canon AE-1 for over 20 years)

Here are my choices: (with very limited budget)

DS Body - $900 (California/US)
-----------------------
Option 1)
++ $100 (with the DS)
+ Kit lens - DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL

  • No other lens and wait it out ;-(

A bit slow for indoor (no flash) shots ?
-- However, I think I would miss the tele end
? Quality
-----------------------
Option 2)
+ $200
+ Normal - FA 50mm f/1.4

  • No other lens and wait it out ;-(

+++ FAST indoor shots
----- Very limited range
++ Quality
-----------------------
Option 3)
+++ $270
? Sigma - 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC
--- A bit slow for indoor (no flash) shots
++ Great Range
? Quality
-----------------------
Option 4)
+ $340
? Tamron - 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di
-- Not wide enough ( 42mm on DS)
+ Fair indoor shots (f2.8)
+ Fair Range
+++ Quality
-----------------------
Option 5)
+ $360
? Tamron - 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD
-- Not wide enough (
42mm on DS)
-- A bit slow for indoor (no flash) shots
+++ Good Range
? Quality
-----------------------

Now more money than I would like to spend to begin this journey

-----------------------
Option 6)

  • $430

+++ The Great Wide Zoom - DA 16-45mm f/4.0

  • No other lens and wait it out ;-(

  • A bit slow for indoor (no flash) shots ?

++++ Quality
-----------------------
Option 7)
+ $470
? Sigma - 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC
++ Normal - FA 50mm f/1.4
+++ FAST indoor shots
++ Good Range
++? Quality
-----------------------
Option 8)

  • $580

+ Kit lens - DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL
++++ Normal - FA 43mm f/1.9 Limited

  • No other lens and wait it out ;-(

++ FAST indoor shots
-- limited range
++++ Quality
? The DA 16-45 may offer the same quality ? but not as FASt for indoor shots
-----------------------

I am too afraid to get anything off eBay. I guess if I could find a good 50mm f1.7 (A) in mint condition, I would go for it. But how do you know what your getting without shooting with it first?

Could you guys/gals offer your wisdom, and help this poor soul (me) make a decision? Do you have any other lens combo/ideas to add to my troubles?

thanks,
.Sam.
