Please suggest first len for istDs newbie

Dear all:

I am a DSLR/SLR newbie. I have used Minolta A1 for around
one year. Now I am interested at *istDs. Could somebody give
me some suggestion about the first one or two lenses for
*istDs newbie like me? Not too expensive but also not too bad
image quality in a limited budget. Any recommendation will be
appreciated. Thanks in advance.
