sharpness test: 20D vs 10D, somewhat detailed
Oct 24, 2004

Recently, I’ve seen many threads commenting on the sharpness or lack thereof, of the 20D. I’ve also seen a desire by some to compare the sharpness of the 20D to the 10D. Before I sold my 10D, I conducted a test just to see if the difference would be significant or not. For those that might be interested, here are some 100% crops with absolutely no post processing. The photos were taken as follows:

The lens, a 100-400L IS was tripod mounted with IS turned off. F stop used was f8, the exposure mode was AV. All parameters were set to default or zero. (Parameter 2 on the 20D). The shots are in JPEG. Both cameras used the large fine jpg setting. A cable release was used and mirror lock up was also utilized. The lens and tripod were not moved, only the cameras were substituted for the shots. A link is also provided to the uncropped files where EXIF data can be viewed. The lens was set at 400mm and focus was on the same area of the image for each shot. One shot af mode using only the center af point was used for both. ISO 200 for each, also. Evaluative metering was used and for some reason, the 20D used a 1/50sec shutter speed, and the 10D used 1/100sec. Lighting did not seem to change, but it might have, I conducted this test about a month ago.

First, the crop from the 20D:

Next the crop from the 10D: (smaller due to the cameras smaller resolution)

Another crop from the 10D, sized to be the same as the 20D
