"Extra reach" for suckers

You get ZERO extra reach!!

Exactly right, but you can't change the minds of the gullible who have bought the free-lunch notion that smaller sensors give them more telephoto reach.

If anyone would want you to believe that you're getting something for nothing, it would be the manufacturers. But here's what Nikon says on the subject (in the D1h/D1x brochure):

“Note: Picture angle approximately 1.5x lens focal length. Lens’ angle of view does not change; lens’ perspective and reproduction ratio at a given distance and aperture is identical to when the lens is used on a 35mm SLR; the difference in viewing is a result of the smaller dimensions of the CCD compared to that of 35mm film. In effect, the image is cropped according to the CCD format.”

There is no extra magnification, no extra reach, no free lunch. It's a reduced size (compared to 35mm) sensor, not a tele-extender.
