It must be the day for photography-related Kickstarter projects to announce their imminent availability. No sooner had we covered the news that the crowdfunded, wearable Memoto camera is about to reach the market having rebranded as the Narrative Clip than we heard an update from an even more popular Kickstarter project. (At least, if the number of people who backed the idea is any indication.) We first covered the motorized Motrr Galileo cameraphone mount when its crowdfunding process had just kicked off, some 18 months ago. Over the following month,... (read more) show less
Photographers shooting with the Leica S-system... show more
Photographers shooting with the Leica S-system today have a new lens option to choose from, taking the total number of S-mount optics offered to eight. Like all but one of the existing Leica S lenses -- and in keeping with the medium format mount's focus on image quality -- the new lens is a prime. The Leica Elmarit-S 45mm f/2.8 Asph. (CS) lens slots into the lineup between the existing 35mm and 70mm optics. After taking into account sensor size, its actual focal length of 45mm equates to a 35mm-equivalent focal length of...     Stitching together a series of images into a panorama... show more
Stitching together a series of images into a panorama is a surprisingly tricky business. Some companies, like Sony and Apple, seem to have a really solid grasp on it, and can easily put together a pano from just a sweep of your device. But a new mathematical model could mean that when your photos get combined, you end up getting a much smoother transition of color, shading, and exposure — making for a more natural looking image. In a paper published in the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Journal on Imaging Sciences... (read more) show less

About a year ago, a Kickstarter popped up for a wearable, life-logging camera dubbed the Memoto. Now, that company has announced some big changes. Not only is Memoto getting a name change to "Narrative", but the device will start shipping in November for Kickstarter backers. As announced in a blog post and a letter from the CEO, Memoto is now Narrative, and the device itself is the Narrative Clip. Apparently the name had to be changed, due to "the brand Memoto can’t be used on a global scale, specifically because it conflicts... (read more) show less

Earlier this year, the selection of Paul Hansen's Gaza Burial as the Photo of the Year for the 2013 World Press Photo Awards lead to a storm of criticism, with accusations of over manipulation of the final image. We delved in-depth into what modifications occurred and the WPPA launched its own probe — and now it seems that the 2014 competition will have more stringent rules in place for post-processing. The winning image was cleared after expert examination, in which one expert stated: “When I compare the RAW file with the... (read more) show less

A Phantom quadcopter will set you back all of $500, which means it's affordable enough for just about anyone to use. Unfortunately, buying one doesn't seem to automatically confer the smarts on how to fly it, or the wisdom on where to — as evidenced by a drone that crashed and almost hit man in Manhattan earlier this week. Apparently, the drone hit a building, and tumbled to the ground on Monday evening, narrowly missing a businessman. The man recovered the memory card from the Phantom quadcopter, and gave it to a local ABC... (read more) show less

DxO Labs has today announced an update to its flagship imaging utility, DxO Optics Pro. The company hasn't yet issued releas notes for the new version, but we do know that it adds support for two new cameras, from Canon and Sony respectively, as well as more lens modules for its increasingly vast selection. Newly-supported cameras in DxO Optics Pro v8.3.2 include the EOS 70D digital SLR, and the full-frame, fixed-lens Sony DSC-RX1R. As for the lens modules, no less than 445 new lens / body pairings are supported, with all but three of these being... (read more) show less

The Three Questions I get asked several questions every time I publish a graph showing Imatest results for multiple copies of lenses like the one below. Most people understand that some copy-to-copy variation is inevitable in the manufacturing process. Most are surprised, though, at how large the sample variation seems to be. Heck, I was surprised at how large the sample variation was when I started doing this kind of testing. The three questions I get asked over and over are the same questions I asked myself when I first started seeing these... (read more) show less

Ever wanted to share a large gallery of images, but didn't want to have to login in to, or sign up for anything? Not every photo you need to send around requires a Flickr album, or to be shared to your Tumblr page. A newly launched website called Picsurge could make it that much easier to share large sets of images without adding any complication to the matter. Announced on Reddit, Picsurge will allow you to upload 250+ images, at up to 10MB a pop, in "jpg, bmp, tif, png and single frame gif" formats. Once uploaded, anyone can... (read more) show less
The problem with backing up your files to the cloud,... show more
The problem with backing up your files to the cloud, is what happens if that service goes down? Or is compromised? Or ups their fees? Western Digital is putting that all under your control with the new My Cloud line of hard drives, which will allow you to access your files wherever you go, the world over. This is hardly a new idea, and is mostly a new spin on the venerable concept of Network Attached Storage. But Western Digital will doubtless make it an awful lot easier to use, allowing you to get into your backed up files using... (read more) show less

The Diana F+ is one of the more popular toy cameras on the market, but if you wanted to play with instant film on it, you had to fork out $89 for an Instax back. Given that the Diana F+ is only $89 on its own, paying the same again for using instant film was probably more than most people wanted to spend. But now you can get both your medium format and your instant in one happy package, as Lomography has bundled both things together in the new Diana F+ Instant Camera for $139. That's some $40 less than the official price for... (read more) show less

There is, it seems, almost nowhere on our planet that the mighty GoPro action camera hasn't been, and next-to-nothing it hasn't been attached to. GoPro cameras have hitched a ride to the edge of space, captured a wingwalker's derring-do on a vintage biplane, accompanied daredevil wingsuit-flyers on the thrill ride of a lifetime, gone deep beneath the ocean on a submersible in search of whale song, and accompanied climbers on some of the tallest manmade structures in the world. Thanks to new smaller, lighter GoPro cameras and underwater housings announced... (read more) show less

In September, Samsung announced the Galaxy Gear, a smartwatch capable of snapping photos thanks to a camera system built into the watchstrap itself. Now the first crop of reviews of this device have landed, and it looks like Samsung has a long way to go before it ends up on everybody's wrists. The initial round of reviews are a decidedly mixed bag, going from the Verge, who were decidedly unimpressed by it, to others who see the potential in what it might become, like Engadget and Anantech. However, they all seem to agree that... (read more) show less

The 20.3-megapixel Samsung NX300 is the most fully realized mirrorless camera the company has produced yet, and one of the best on the market in its class. Though the NX300 is slightly bigger and heavier than its predecessors, its "retro modern" design looks great, and it's still noticeably more portable than the typical SLR camera kit. The NX300's brand-new APS-C sized, CMOS image sensor forgoes the all-too-common "pack in the pixels" upgrade in favor of better image quality and a quicker and more accurate Hybrid AF system, thanks to its on-chip phase...     Levi's recently unveiled a project called Station to Station, part of the larger #makeourmark campaign, which brings together modern and vintage esthetics. As part of that, a number of old gadgets have been converted for the modern age, including taking old cameras, and retrofitting them to be able to post stills and video to Instagram. The modifications were undertaken by San Francisco design company Fake Love, who took a 1939 Graflex still camera, 1953 Bolex B8 video camera, 1901 Underwood No. 5 typewriter, and 1953 Gibson...
