For your pixel-peeping pleasure, we've just posted... show more
For your pixel-peeping pleasure, we've just posted First Shots of Sony's newest compact system camera, the Sony NEX-3N. Boasting a 16.1-megapixel, APS-C sensor, the Sony Alpha NEX-3N is a direct followup to the excellent entry-level Sony NEX-F3, but in some ways it's also a return to the ethos of the NEX-C3. Compactness is key, and the Sony NEX-3N's newly-designed body is almost exactly the same size as that of the C3. In an impressive feature of miniaturization, though, both of the key features added in the NEX-F3 -- its built-in... (read more) show less

Siberian-born photographer Evgenia Arbugaeva has captured the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2013 for her poignant photo series on life in a small town in Siberia. Arbugaeva's winning submission, titled "Tiksi," after the name of the village she photographed, helped her capture the competition's grand prize, which includes a Leica M camera valued at 10,000 Euros (approximately US$13,000) and a cash prize of 5,000 Euros (approximately US$6,500). The second-place winner was Slovenian photographer Ciril Jazbec, who won a Leica M camera and... (read more) show less

Chicago-based photographer Paul Octavious sees color everywhere, whether he's standing in an empty alleyway or in front of a lush field. But Octavious doesn't see just any colors, he sees specific hues and tints that align with the industry-standard Pantone Matching System, which is used by printers and designers to ensure color accuracy. As part of his new photo series titled, appropriately, The Pantone Project, Octavious has been photographing himself holding Pantone swatches in front of real-life scenes that match the specific...     Bruton Stroube is a commercial photography and video... show more
Bruton Stroube is a commercial photography and video studio in St. Louis, MO that recently threw a party for various advertising types. But rather than intalling a boring old photobooth at the party, they set up their Phantom high-speed camera and let the attendees go wild at 1500fps, which produced some amazing, super slo-mo footage (see below). While the photobooth at your cousin's bar mitzvah was mostly just cheap wigs and some funny glasses, the people at this party had a lot more fun with it. Liquid went flying, punches were...     While the plague of unwanted photography is mostly associated with celebrities and paparazzi, the fact that we live in a world of Google Glass, photography drones, and widespread CCTVs has caused a lot more people to be worried about who is taking their photos and where. A new, patented device could stop people from taking your image without permission — assuming they're using a flash. The patent for the gadget was published in April of 2012, and while it hasn't made it to stores yet, it's an intriguing idea. The patent, filed... (read more) show less

Last fall, Pentax announced two new digital SLRs that are near-identical to each other, save for one very important detail. Both the Pentax K-5 II and K-5 IIs are also very closely related to the preceding -- and very well-received -- Pentax K-5, but with a couple of important improvements. The Pentax K-5 II is the mainstream model. It takes the K-5's design and improves its low-light autofocusing capabilities to the near-magical. It also sports a new gapless LCD monitor that's significantly easier on the eye than that in the standard K-5, and which... (read more) show less

This is really cool...  What would Lebron James look like if he was a character in The Matrix? We might get to find out some day if Sci-Fi-worthy multi-viewpoint camera technology being developed by a Japanese broadcast company makes it to the mainstream. With the ability to create real "bullet time" slow motion replays from numerous angles, the multi-viewpoint camera system is currently being built by Japan's national broadcasting organization, NHK. And just as Keanu Reeves' character Neo from The Matrix is able dodge speeding... (read more) show less

Just weeks after reports that Olympus was to kill off its low-end point-and-shoot cameras comes a similar report for Fujifilm. As reported by Amateur Photographer, Fujifilm plans to halve its compact camera offerings, cutting the cheaper model and retaining focus on its well received high-end cameras. This information comes from an interview published in the business newspaper Nikkei, with Hiroshi Tanaka, general manager of Fuji's Optical Device and Electronic Imaging Products Division. Tanaka stated that the low-end models have... (read more) show less
A new breakthrough from Bell Labs has created a... show more
A new breakthrough from Bell Labs has created a lensless photography system based on off-the-shelf parts, that can assemble an image out of far less data than most cameras. While it's not going to unseat traditional photography, this lensless camera opens up some intriguing possibilities for the future of imaging. While most cameras use lenses to capture the light for recording images, lensless systems are not exactly revolutionary. After all, a pinhole camera is technically a lensless photography system. But this new set-up from... (read more) show less

Leica took the wraps off its soon-to-launch Mini M a bit more today, showing a partial image of the black camera emerging from a box on its Facebook page. In the Facebook posting, the company said photographers will be able to get "a hands-on experience" with the new camera at Leica Authorized Dealers on June 11. Leica also said that the new Mini M will have a "larger than usual sensor for its relatively small body." But other than that and the rampant rumors that have filled the Internet about the new Leica camera, there's... (read more) show less

With a 50x optical zoom that delivers an amazing 35mm-equivalent range of 24-1200mm, the Canon SX50 brings distant subjects up close and personal -- and it does so with intelligence and grace. Hand-held shots at full zoom and in good light are relatively easy to take, thanks to the SX50's improved image stabilization and Zoom Framing Assist function. And the end results are surprisingly sharp and pleasing for the digital camera's class and sensor size. The Canon SX50 HS will no doubt build a fervent following of zoom addicts, including enthusiasts and... (read more) show less
Liquid lenses have been used in other fields for years... show more
Liquid lenses have been used in other fields for years but they never quite made the transition to cameras. So while you'll find them used in medicine and even some eyeglasses, you're unlikely to use one in your shooting rig. However, Canon is still involved in the field, and has been awarded a new patent in Japan for a novel way to adjust a liquid lens. As reported by DPReview, this patent still uses electrowetting to adjust the lens, but rather than modifying the shape of the water to create the lens directly, it uses the... (read more) show less

When time-lapse videos are done well, they can really capture the beauty of a place or event. We've featured the gorgeous videos of Enrique Pacheco before -- including this movie tour of Morocco --  and he outdoes himself with a brand new time-lapse of Rome, Italy, which is downright glorious. In the 2:45-minute clip, titled "Urbs Aeterna" (Eternal City), Pacheco uses a Sony A99, Zeiss lenses, and a Kietacam X-lidercam M slider to capture the majesty of the ancient architecture and ruins of Rome via time-lapse photography.     Many higher-end DSLRs feature multiple memory card slots, so that you can record files to both cards in case anything happens to one or the other. Now a new CompactFlash (CF) card from Wise is going to attempt to offer that same protection in a single card, but we don't know how exactly it'll work. Revealed on Japanese site DC Watch, when used normally, the Wise CompactFlash will have 64GB of storage, and 60MB/50MB read/write speeds. But switch it to mirroring mode, and those numbers drop to 32GB and 30MB/25MB, but all your... (read more) show less
