The Beauty of Feathers

Challenge #108 in the Life in the Natural World series. Hosted by RuthC.
Challenge has finished
The structure of a bird's feather is quite amazing when looked at through a Macro lens or a microscope. The design is quite specific for each species of bird, whether the feathers are to aid flight, waterproofing, downy to keep warm, muted to camouflage, or brightly-coloured to display themselves to the world. Show us examples of the beautiful design of feathers, a single feather or many. They may still be attached to their owners, or have been discarded, for you to find them and remark on their beauty and structure. The theme of the challenge is the feather, not the bird, so enter photos with this in mind. Macros and close-ups welcome. Maximum size of entry, 1,600px on its longer side.
