This statue is a surviving part of the old Crystal Palace and gardens that was built in 1854 in this part of South East London, then known as Sydenham Heights. It was a popular visitor attraction until it was destroyed in a huge blaze on the night of 30th November 1936. The Crystal Palace radio mast is seen in the background.
