Shot at Fort Point in the San Francisco Presidio, next to the Golden Gate bridge. The fort protected the entrance to San Francisco bay - which is the actual "Golden Gate", and not the bridge itself - during the Civil War. Even though the Civil War was fought on the East coast of the USA, there was a reasonable fear that the Confederacy would attack San Francisco to take, or at least disrupt, the massive amounts of gold and silver being mined in Nevada and California, and processed and shipped from San Francisco, much of it used to finance the North in the war.
