This monument stands at a hill overlooking the landing site of the first trans-Atlantic flight by Alcock and Brown (1919). The aircraft was damaged upon arrival due to an attempt to land in what appeared from the air to be a suitable green field but which turned out to be the bog, but neither of the airmen was hurt
