Great shot! When does the compression wave form and how long does it exist for? (it's related to the 'sonic boom' - right?)

When the air directly on the surface of the wings is exalerated very fast to the speed above Mach 1 (local speed of sound), the local temperature, presure and desity is changed incredebly fast. Water particles (H and O) in the air condenses into water. This creates the mist around the wings. The Sonic boom you hear on the ground are actually 2 booms just after oneanother end are the result of presure waves the plane creates and we pick up as sound. The V shape of the mist is caused by the soundwaves, where te air (and plane) are traveling faster then the speed of sound and the soundwaves fallow after the plane. This proces leads to the situation the plane is already further away then sound can travel in that time. That is also why you first see the plane and then hear it.

Sir no offence, i remember i´ve seen this image before. And the plane is F-14 (which is not flying primarily anymore). So did you take this with a film camera or ... ?

You do not know your jet fighter planes. This is an F-18E Super Hornet. It is a digital picture all the way.

Indeed F-18E. Allthough the back of the plain is not visible, you can tell by the nose and cockpit.
