It is not unusual to see cats hanging around some archeological sites in Rome. The reason is that rats have always been a big deal for this city and cats keep them away. In Largo Argentina there is a refugee where volunteers and veterinaries take care of the Roman cats, they feed, immunize and neuter them. There are no cages and cats are free to go anywhere they want.
