Chilika Lake is a large brackish water lake receiving seawater from the Bay of Bengal and fresh water from a number of rivers. It supports not only innumerable livelihoods but also is an internationally important birding area and is known to harbour the endangered Irrawady Dolphin. Chilika is on the Ramsar list of important wetlands.
