Extreme water behavior or quantities have always caused great problems, and despite enormous efforts to solve them, still do. Show us one hundred views of untamed water: waves, tides, floods, rain, and any other kinds of water aspects that Man can not control. PLEASE OBSERVE ALL THE RULES. It is the best way to avoid disqualification.

Processing rules:

The longer side of the photo must not be over 1600px. Do not enter bigger pictures.
Format and aspect may be as you please.
Any kind of post processing is acceptable as long as it accents your point of view on the topic.
No frames / borders.
No watermarks, date/time nor other identification marks.

Capture date rules:

No restrictions.

Know exactly where you took this! I'm not a big fan of HDR but in this case it works well. The detail in those waves is just perfect. Nicely Done!!!

Nice picture. The colors of the water are spot on.

I think that you could improve the picture a bit by desaturating the sky just a little.

Nevertheless: excellent.

Wow, didn't know this photo would stir up so many people! It's a two shot blend - one for the sky, one for everything else. Although it may not look it in the photo, a blended shot was the only way to capture the tonal range in the image - otherwise parts of the the sky would be blown out and the image would would hit the 'ol recycle bin on the PC.

I too prefer to capture an image in a single shot, but sometimes it's just not do-able.

I'm not saying this is on the level of Adams, but for those who rail against manipulation in post processing...

From "Ansel Adams: Some Thoughts About Ansel And AboutMoonrise”

"Moonrise was Ansel's most difficult negative of all to print. Using simple pieces of cardboard, Ansel would painstakingly burn in (darken with additional light from the enlarger) the sky, which was really quite pale with streaks of cloud throughout. He was careful to hold back a bit on the moon. The mid-ground was dodged (light withheld), though the crosses have been subtly burned in. This process took Ansel more than two minutes per print of intricate burning and dodging. Ansel created Moonrise with a night sky, a luminous moon and an extraordinary cloud bank that seems to reflect the moon's brilliance. Moonrise is sleight of hand. Moonrise is magic."

By the way, there's a pretty good B&W conversion hiding in this photo.

If art had to look natural to be appreciated then wouldn't have Michael Angelo, Monet, Cezanne, etc.. To each his own, but I find much more pleasure in viewing a photo like this as opposed to a "documentary" photograph.

How did you even out the contrast between the sea and the sky? It doesn't look like an HDR shot, but it appears you used some kind of photo-stacking method.

My guess is multiple layer masks in PS, not too hard to do with a little know-how. That's one sweet looking photo, I'm surprised it didn't score higher (then again, I'm craving more resolution, 1000x667 just isn't enough for an epic shot like this).

Some people just don't like HDR and the like. I'm one of them. It's a great shot composition-wise, but the treatment - although a nice technical achievement by itself - is way over the top in my opinion.

There was definitely some manual exposure blending. Not Photomatix though. Personally i love this shot and the treatment. To each his own. Steve's photos have won many awards and publications so he knows what works for him.
