A close-up of the Intel Pentium II Slot 1 CPU. These were the CPUs that came in a cartridge because the cache was not inside the CPU, but external on a PCB. Everything was put into a cartridge, that was inserted into a slot on the motherboard. Expensive to make and Intel went back to the "conventional" square packages as soon as they were able to.
