This rare turtle named after the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, could be threatened with extinction if the proposed Urannah dam in Northern Queensland Australia gets approved. Steve Irwin and his dad discovered this species whilst surveying a river for crocodiles. Not only was Steve's discovery exciting for the world of herpetology, he also had the honour of having a newfound species of turtle named after him: "Irwin's Turtle, Elseya irwini.”
