Have your subject look at us, the viewers. Show me a piercing stare, or an "invite me in" look, or the "I hate you and your camera" expression. Maybe a teasing look, an "I want you" look. Capture emotion in the eyes. Other people and animals in the photo are OK, but the main subject should be looking into the camera and should be human, of any age or gender.
