Startrails.exe is a nice way to do these pictures if you have issues with noise at really long exposures. It does all the stacking for you. Less control, but easier process. Just google it, its free!

I bracketed 11 shots after sunset and meregd them to HDR. When completely dark I took 420 x 60second shots of the stars, stacked them in photoshop and manually blended with the HDR image.

I also removed the fisheye distortion with the fisheye hemi plugin.

To add the color to the stars, did you apply a different filter to each of the 420 shots of the stars? (And you really did that many?!)

Just use sunlight white balance to capture the color then boost the saturation. The stars are colored, for example our sun is a yellow dwarf. I used a 10.5 fisheye which doesn't accept filters.
