Dylan's song speaks of the lonliness of the soul in the gathering darkness. I view this as more as being reflective at the end of one's existence, rather than the end of the day. From the vantage point of an ending, one gains insight and perhaps acceptance as to why things happen the way they do, and looks ahead towards transition.
