I agree, I liked a lot of other images better than the 1st place one. It was a nice shot, but it obviously won due to the background more than the subject (which was what the challenge was about).
sort of has lead me to believe that a lot of people that vote focus on a few things, namely skies and most pictures taken with a grad ND / with a good contrasty sky will win.

ah well, nice shot anyhow!
