Challenge #9 in the Insights series. Hosted by SigmaChrome.
Challenge has finished
Cameras equipped with the Foveon sensor are renown for producing stunning colour images because of their unique three layer technology. But how good are they at black and white? There are a lot of people who think the monochrome output from these cameras is at least as good their colour. Make a powerful statement in monochrome with your Sigma-Foveon images. Subjects can be anything, so long as they don't contravene the DPR Challenges Rules.

This lilly was growing in the front yard of a home I walked past each day. I like the contrast of the white petals and the black background.

Taken: Sunday, 2nd August, 2009
Focal length: 40 mm
Shutter speed: 1/30 sec
Aperture: F8
ISO: 100
Notes: I shot this in manual model. I metered off the back of my hand, then opened on stop. I held a large piece of black foam core behind the flower to get the black background. Post processing was minimal. A levels adjustment, minor sharpening and conversion to black and white.
